Holiday Travel Tips

If you’re going away for the holidays this year, you’re probably unhappily anticipating a hike in gas prices, long lines at airport security and delays all-around. According to the Bureau of Transportation, Thanksgiving and the winter holiday season are the busiest long-distance travel times in a given year. While travelers cannot avoid hefty waits at check-in and traffic on the highway, there are plenty of measures to take in order to alleviate any holiday season travel stress.

• Know when to travel: For local excursions, people tend to leave on Thursdays. If traveling over 100 miles away, Wednesday through Sunday are the most popular days.

• About 90% of Thanksgiving travel is through one’s vehicle.

• The Sunday and Monday after Thanksgiving are the busiest days to travel back home. If you book a flight or drive on Tuesday, you’ll avoid a lot of traffic.

• Weather delays don’t always depend on where you’re flying out of. If you live in Florida but are flying to New York, you may experience delays due to a snowstorm, for example.

• Allow ample time to check in at the airport and make it through security. More travelers means more time to wait as each individual is screened.

• Travel on Saturday as opposed to Sunday. Most people want to make it back for work without sacrificing any weekend time.

• The average age of Thanksgiving travelers is just under 34, as opposed to right above 36 for the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, according to the BTS.

• Preview airport restrictions and laws implemented for safe air travel…you cannot avoid them and will save a world of time if you plan ahead.

• Book a trip off-season. For example, go to New England when the leaves aren’t changing…you’ll save on local bed and breakfasts, whose popularity heightens during the fall.

• Consider booking through an online travel agency. You can find new discounts and sales each day, as well as vacation packages unavailable elsewhere.

The best discount travel online can be found through sites such as Orbitz and Expedia, according to StarReviews.com. If you’re an avid planner, you’ll be able to customize your own trip homepage, complete with photos, video and comments through Orbitz’s TripHub.

If you’re like most travelers, saving money is important when going away during the holidays. When booking through Travelocity, you can save just by using a particular credit card. Before the cold weather arrives, consider booking travel online and taking advantages of discount flights and destination-stays.

A hen evening with Champneys Collection and Warner Leisure Hotels

Posted: under Travel & Leisure.
Tags: , , , , ,

My friend is getting married later this year and has asked my best friend and I to organise her hen night. We are under strict instruction that it must be relaxed and formal. It is to be a small group of close friends and family. The celebration should be suitable for the whole group and there is to be no drunken happening.

I thought that instead of an evening why we don’t make it a weekend. We could go to a lovely hotel and have a pampering section which would suit everyone involved and be suitable for all ages. I thought that this would be a good and relaxing experience before the big day and it would be a chance to talk to everyone in the group. My friend loved the idea and wanted me to book it straight away. I was over the moon.

I decided the best places to look at for this weekend would be either Warner Leisure Hotels or Champneys Collection. It will be a great event and there is no room for any drunken mistakes. There will be champagne for everyone but I am hoping everyone with drink in moderation.

As my friend is so particular about things I have given her so many options that she cannot be disappointed. I have sent out the invitations and I hope everyone can attend. I’m hoping that considering the hen weekend as taken so much to organise that I will not be expected to help with the wedding organising and preparation but I think that is wishful thinking.

Getting Lodge Decor

Posted: under Hotels and Lodging.
Tags: , ,

I don’t know about you, but I have always loved rustic home décor. There is that warm, comfortable atmosphere it gives that just relaxes you and makes you feel contented and at home. A lot of friends I know are starting to redecorate their homes to give it that rustic look, even if they’re in the middle of cosmopolitan California. They told me this all started after they’ve enjoyed a vacation at a hunting lodge, and something about the coziness of its decorations and the uniqueness of the accessories appealed to their inner countryman.

If you also want to redecorate your home by giving it that lodge décor theme, you can easily do so. And, like my friends, it doesn’t matter if you’re living in Montana or in New York. All you need is your creativity and some proper furniture and accessories, and you’ll have your very own lodge or country house sitting in the middle of the metropolis. Rustic in the old days used to mean “rickety and cheap”, but believe me, that sort of thinking is now gone. Rustic décor now teeters on the brink of being called sophisticated and trendy.

How to go about it? First, change your windows, your flooring, and your wall art. Windows are very important at changing the overall look and feel of a home. Try using canvas or cotton with tabbed tops, or a print fabric curtain. You can also use plain wooden blinds. And avoid getting those frilly, lacy curtains or valances. These will ruin the whole rustic lodge theme that you’re trying to achieve. Do throw in a few wildlife rugs for good measure.

What you put on your walls will also play a major role in changing the appearance and ambiance of your home. Colors are critical here. Get some earth tones for your paint or wallpaper on the double. Pastels, of course, are out of the questions. If you can, use split logs and chinking for a log cabin look, or just go with paint. Don’t forget wall art and accessories. They make even the most unsightly walls look good and add a vital touch to the overall effect of your décor. Find and use hunting prints, or even old dusty advertising signs, and stick them on the walls. They will give your home that additional campy atmosphere.

With regards to rustic furniture, you don’t have to go all out by filling your house with them. Adding a few pieces here and there will be enough; this will also make them stand out better. Add a few cushions or pillows to your seating furniture. Aside from giving them an additional level of comfort, it will serve as the element that connects the rustic pieces with the other furnishings in a room. As for matching the furniture with the lighting, it’s really not that important. Just include a variety of choice pieces, like a pinecone chandelier or a tree table lamp.

Accessories are essential in putting together the whole rustic décor theme. Be sure to select colors and designs that will match the look you want to achieve. Get some wooden bowls, bear napkin holders, and pinecone placemats for the kitchen. For the garden and patio, accents such as arbors, trellises, wooden chairs and benches work well in providing that campy feeling. Coat racks, mirrors, blankets and metal art can also be used in living rooms, powder rooms, and even bedrooms. And don’t forget the ubiquitous wall mounts, which can give your home that final, rustic touch.

You don’t have to live in a log cabin or a hunting lodge to enjoy the casual, comfortable atmosphere of rustic décor and furnishings. With the right furnishings and your creativity, you’ll achieve that homey look and charming appeal, whether you’re in a city apartment or in a country house.

Golf Club Custom Fitting

Posted: under Golf Travel & Resorts.
Tags: , , ,

We all know that Golf is a game that’s difficulties can induce high levels of frustrations. So the one piece of advice we have is to make sure you have the right equipment. Don’t make it more difficult for yourself by using clubs that just don’t feel right.

Every golfer’s body and swing are unique to that individual and that’s what custom fitting is all about. Custom fitting golf clubs involves a quick self assessment of your game and several easy measurements. To custom fit your golf clubs, the following information is needed:

• Your gender (male or female)

• Your height in your stockings or socks

• The distance from your wrist (where it bends) to the floor (without shoes)

• What club you use at the 135 meter marker

• Handicap, age, swing speed

Firstly, your gender is used to put you into the correct fitting scale. Then, your height and the distance in inches from your wrist to the floor are used together to determine the length of golf club that is appropriate for you. (About 80% of golfers are Standard length.)

Your age, handicap, estimated golf swing speed and club you use at the 135 meter marker are all combined to determine the shaft flex that is appropriate for you.

Club Length & Flex

With regards to the length of your club there’s one main point you should consider: a longer golf club will hit further given the same swing speed – so length can be a good thing. But, as I’m sure you’re thinking, it can’t be that simple. And you’re right! Since the swing arc is longer, it often is also harder to keep under control – so length can be a bad thing. All things being equal, most golfers will opt for longer length to the sacrifice of greater control. But there’s still a decision to be made!

The standard length of a steel shafted Driver for a man is 44 inches. Graphite shafted drivers are manufactured 1 inch longer than steel shafted clubs because graphite shafts weigh less than steel shafts allowing us to produce a longer club with the same swing . The proper length of a golf club is a function of your height and the length of your arms. Some golf shop provide a Custom Fitting Wizard that determines the correct length for you with just a few simple measurements.

Flex is the torsional stiffness of the golf club, which is provided by the type of golf club shaft that is used. Generally, stiffer shafts are better for stronger hitting golfers.

The proper flex of a golf club is a function of your strength and golfing skills. Determining the correct flex is most important for your Woods and longer Irons. Short irons, wedges and putters are not impacted very much by the different flexes as the differences between flexes becomes very small in the shorter clubs.

Loft & Lie Adjustments

A lie adjustment requires bending the hardened metal in which an iron is cast. We strongly advise getting your lie fitting done in person. Online fittings while accurate do not take into account your natural ball address. Some players are more naturally upright and some like to lean into the ball. Once you have lie adjusted a club it is usually not a good idea to re-adjust if you later find it was the wrong adjustment.

From years of building experience we find it rare to need more than a 2 degree adjustment upright or flat, therefore we only perform lie adjustments to either extreme.

Woods, hybrid clubs and putters can not be adjusted. The reason these clubs can not be adjusted is because the hosel of each is cast in a way where physically bending the head at all will cause damage. In woods and hybrids it will crack or bend the crown of the club, and putter hosels are not made with the strength required for adjustment after the casting process.

Loft adjustments require a different type of bend than a lie adjustment. Some people receive advice in which they require a certain loft adjustment. We have never understood loft adjustments since it merely changes the loft of the club. We recommend buying golf clubs matching the loft you seek and avoid custom loft adjustments. Bending the loft of an iron weakens the hardened metal and can lead to future metal fatigue, since the actual bend twists the metal to an extent. If the loft of your 5 iron is too strong, use a 6 iron. If it is too weak, use a 4 iron.

Whitewater Rafting Rapids and Classifications in Maine

Posted: under Adventure Travel.
Tags: , , , ,

Whitewater rafting is a great activity that has become more common around the world since the 1970s. Since then, we have developed an expertise in the sport, and there is now better quality equipment available to use. Because of this, a river that has been known to swallow whole an expedition in the past is now safe enough for people to take their rafting trips down hundreds of times each year. There are also outfitters, which are rafting operators, who will be your guides for the trip. These outfitters have legislated safety requirements to go by, and they vary depending on the area you are rafting in. However, all off the requirements are closely the same to ensure that everyone is safe. You should talk with your raft operator about all of the safety guidelines and the classifications of the rapids before you decide to sign up for the trip.

There are six different whitewater classifications that range from easy to nearly impossible. Class one is, obviously, the easiest. It has no obstacles, only small ripples, and a slow current. Class two is considered moderately difficult with occasional obstacles and a medium current with waves. Classes one and two are ideal for younger and inexperienced people to run on. Class three is difficult with longer rapids and strong currents that are irregular, and class four is very difficult, longer with numerous waves, and has steeper drops. These two classes, three and four, are considered okay for more experienced groups to take. Class five is extremely difficult, has very big drops, is very swift, and heavily obstructed with obstacles, which is considered an amateur class. Then there is class six. This class is nearly impossible and extremely dangerous. It should only be run by expert teams, with all precautions taken and close studies completed.

Maine has three rivers that are usually used for whitewater rafting. These are the Kennebec River, Penobscot River, and the Dead River. Each one of the these rivers are different and unique in their own way, but you are sure to get the thrill and excitement that you seek for your adventure on at least one of these rivers. The Kennebec River has a twelve mile trip that begins on Indian Pond at Harris Station. It then flows through the Kennebec Gorge, which ends at The Forks. This twelve mile trip can be classified anywhere between a class two and a class four, because in sections of the river there are all of the traits that these classifications have. Next, is the Penobscot River, and this river has a fourteen mile long trip. For the first two miles, it descends from McKay Station through Ripogenus Gorge. The other twelve miles of rapids will take you on a journey that will end near Pockwockamus Falls. This river has all the traits of a class three to class four rapids. Last, but not least, is the Dead River, which has the longest stretch of continuous rapids at sixteen miles. Your trip will begin at Grand Falls and will end at The Forks. The Dead River has a classification of classes four and five and should only be run by experienced whitewater rafters.

Kauai Snorkeling: An Amazing Underwater Adventure

Posted: under Outdoors.
Tags: , , , ,

Hawaii, particularly the island of Kauai, is most well-known for its beautiful coasts and amazing beaches. These coast lines make for some of the world’s best snorkeling adventures. If you are in the process of scheduling a vacation to the Hawaiian Island of Kauai, you will want to examine snorkeling. If you are currently unfamiliar with it, you may be surprised just how fun, exciting, educational, or romantic it can be.

Snorkeling involves swimming near the surface of water with the use of special equipment. That equipment may include a diving mask, swim fins, and a snorkel. Additional equipment, such as a wet suit, may be needed. The equipment used will all depend on where you are snorkeling and the water temperature. When it comes to snorkeling, there are many who enjoy it on a regular basis. These individuals are likely to live around or frequently visit a tropic area because that is where the waters are most ideal for snorkeling.

There are many individuals, yourself included, who already know that they would like to take part in this amazing underwater adventure, but others are not so sure. If you are interested in taking a guided snorkeling tour, but you are unsure as to whether or not it will be worth it, you are encouraged to familiarize yourself with Kauai snorkeling. Focusing specifically on Kauai snorkeling is important because what you will find, see, and do may be different than snorkeling adventures in other areas of the world.

In Kauai, you will find that there are a number of different coastal regions that are ideal for snorkeling and other underwater activities. Despite the fact that most of the coast is ideal for snorkeling, you may find that the Na Pali coast has the most to offer. The Na Pali coast is located along the northern shore of Kauai. Its rugged terrain makes it only accessible by boats. That is one of the many reasons why the Na Pali coast is ideal for snorkeling. The limited amount of traffic makes for calm ocean waters, which in turn may create an inviting environment for nearby marine life.

What you will see and learn, while on a Kauai snorkeling tour, will all depend on where you are snorkeling and who your tour guide is. It is hard to pinpoint exactly what you will discover while on a Kauai snorkeling tour. If you make the decision to book a Na Pali coast tour, it is likely that you will be able to see coral reefs, sea turtles, and dolphins. Additional ocean life, may include, but should not be limited to, fish, mollusks, sea urchins, jellyfish, and kelp.

While what you will see and learn on a snorkeling tour is important, it is also important to understand who can go on these tours. Unfortunately, there are many individuals who are misinformed when it comes to snorkeling. Many believe that, because they have never snorkeled before, they are unqualified to take part in a guided tour. This simply is not true. When on a Kauai vacation, you will find that you and just about everyone else you are traveling with may be able to take part in this fun underwater activity.

The first step in determining if you qualify for Na Pali coast snorkeling is to make reservations with an experienced tour guide or company that offers expeditions. Once you book a reservation with one of these individuals or companies, you may be required to take a small swimming test. This test may help to determine whether or not it will be safe for you to swim in the deep water. Additional training is provided by many tour guides and companies. This means that if you are not qualified to participate in a snorkeling tour, you very well may be at the end of training.

In a way, snorkeling is often referred to as a relaxing and romantic activity. This is often because the views below the water and along the Na Pali coast are literally breath taking. In addition to being considered romantic, snorkeling is also ideal for those vacationing as a family. In most cases, you will find that children as young as four or five can participate in this amazing and unforgettable adventure.
