Top Ten Travel Tips

Posted: under Travel Tips.
Tags: ,

Have you ever experienced a serious disaster whilst on holiday? If not, it’s merely a matter of time. It has been said there are two kinds of travellers, those that have experienced a problem holiday and those that are still going to.

Tasked with identifying the top ten travel tips immediately got my mind going but an idea soon took shape. Why not use the experiences of the professionals, ask them to identify the more common causes of problems when travelling. Unbeknown to me this certainly dropped the cat amongst the pigeons, largely because limiting this to only ten became a problem, thank you so much to all those who were a part of the panel.

One of the most common problems and a unanimous choice of the panel were problems surrounding logistical arrangements. Largely related to reservations; dates and ticketing, these can be problematic despite the ease and simplicity of the internet. It is imperative when planning any holiday to any destination that all bookings are made well in advance, followed up either by e-mail or telephone a few days before your departure and still in time to rectify problems if discovered. After this has been done, prevent further problems by ensuring you have proof in the form of copies of any relevant document or reference number, this could be a receipt confirmation of a deposit paid or any item depending on your personal arrangements. This is one of those suggestions where prevention is definitely far better than cure.

Our second tip is all encompassing and covers the packing of essential items. Obviously these items might vary according to your personal plans but would perhaps include items such as passports and ID documents; applicable drivers licences; money – credit cards, wallets and other financial needs; mobile phones and camera’s, (get with it, preferably digital) are essential items nowadays, together with supporting items such as chargers and memory cards. On my personal list are always sunglasses, activity equipment, a few books, a pack of cards, a multi-purpose pocket knife and other smaller items or games which always come in handy.

How are we doing so far, the bottom line is that with tip numbers one and two you can go almost anywhere in the world and if you have forgotten anything else you can purchase them en route.

Tip number three is so absolutely boring you might well stop reading at this point but it remains one of the most common causes of holidays being cancelled. Before you leave home ensure that all domestic matters are resolved and tucked in to bed. These will again vary but will certainly surround adequate locking up and security issues; paying all accounts, in particular municipal services; cancelling any deliveries; ensuring access is available to a trusted friend or relative in the event of a fire or emergency; ensuring pets are adequately cared for and that someone responsible is able to contact you in the case of emergency during your holiday. Yes…boring….but oh so often the cause of having to either come back early or returning to face a smelly deep freeze or worse.

The basics are covered and now we can move onto the fun part, tip number four surrounds choosing the right holiday for your needs and enjoyment. To haul three children under ten years old to a game reserve for ten days will stretch your patience and theirs, you might enjoy spending half an hour looking at a bird or waiting for an Elephant to come to a waterhole while sipping a Chardonnay, they certainly wouldn’t. If you have had a really stressful year and are going on holiday for a time out, a few days in London followed by a few in Rome and a low cost flight via Moscow to save a few cents would mean lots of flights; too many airports and complicated transit arrangements. Our panel suggests taking a few extra minutes to analyse the real needs of all travelling partners before selecting your holiday destination.

You have analysed your own needs and decided on let’s say a scuba diving holiday as an example. Tip number five stays with destination choice and is all about research. That’s easy I hear you saying, once you’ve decided what type of holiday you want. However, you could also end up on a scuba diving holiday in monsoon season, perhaps to a great destination at most times of the year but in the month you have chosen, it’s infested with mosquito’s and a temperature of 45 degrees, is that what you wanted.

Perhaps you might be looking for a quiet and romantic getaway and choose a week in a Spanish seaside village only to find out it clashes with a local political election and the local school holidays. Time researching local conditions is well spent, beware particularly of special offers or discounts, these are usually offered for a reason and often due to seasonality or other sub-optimal characteristics of the destination at the time the offer applies. This same principle applies to discounted flights and packages, it’s important to be fully aware of which items and costs are included and not included in the price.

How far have we gone so far, in summary we have the logistics and essential equipment under control, chosen a stunning destination to ensure our needs are covered and we have selected the dates to suit the destination characteristics.

Tip number six is about the modern day wonder of the travellers’ world. You guessed it, the internet. This modern tool enables you to ensure you are fully au fait with all and any information you might need. From disco’s to dive centres, museums to mausoleums, cathedrals to camping grounds, the information is easily available to you from the comfort of your home; office or failing which, an internet café. Referring back to our Spanish village, if you want to know the history, what to see and do while you’re there, the internet provides this service. Even once you’re there, if you want to send pics and news to someone at home, the internet has really made this simple. I read recently that in excess of 70% of all travel arrangements are now made on-line, wow, that is an awesome number and it is no doubt climbing, not without reason.

A list of top ten tips would definitely be incomplete without a reference to the importance of adequate packing. Notice we say adequate as it does vary according to destination and travel method. A car trip to Port Alfred with a trailer and roof rack is a far different scenario than a flight to London. Tip number seven is to pack early; to pack correctly and most of all to pack according to a well prepared list. One often makes the mistake of packing too much, leaving little room for error and no space to include a few souvenirs or that tee-shirt that looked so good in the market. On a personal note our family has a rule, what you pack you carry; this has a fantastic effect of ensuring no one packs without a plan.

The boring battle of the budget. We all have dream destinations we hope to get to one day; this is unfortunately not a reality for most of us. Tip number eight is to ensure you remain within your personal limits of expenditure. Interest rates are high and could get higher; credit offered by banks can be easily obtained by utilising the credit card options so often available. You don’t want to spend the year after your holiday stressed out about how you’re going to pay it back during the rest of the year. Plan adequately before and during your holiday. Whilst it’s certainly fun to spoil yourselves during a holiday, we suggest you allocate a daily allowance to each person and to the whole group; this will certainly help control costs, particularly in an international destination when one is not fully conversant, it can come back and bite quite hard.

The members of our panel are all seasoned travellers, local and overseas. In conversation we certainly learned that all had on occasion bumped their heads or made often silly mistakes. Our unanimous tip number nine is to enjoy South Africa. As residents of this beautiful country we are all absolutely blessed to live within a reasonable distance from either a beach; lake; mountain; game reserve or whatever it might be that appeals to your family. Too often we feel the need to travel far and wide when it’s all on our doorstep. We might travel to an exotic dive destination but haven’t yet experienced Aliwal Shoal; sit on a Mauritian Beach when our coast offers some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, perhaps even camping in France when you’ve never been to the Drakensberg or Clarens.

It might be a cliché but we really do have it all in one country. We certainly hope that our leaders will take every action to ensure that it stays that way. We in turn need to appreciate it and invest in local tourism and the job creation it offers. Our panel felt that we need to market ourselves as a destination a little better than we do, encouraging local travellers that Cairo is perhaps not always better than Cape Town. Local is lekker, it has its place alongside braaivleis, biltong, sunny skies and all the rest.

This might be our last tip of the ten we were confined to but it is the simplest and most important – have fun! You’ve worked hard, you deserve your holiday, please don’t forget to enjoy it. In most cases when on holiday, one is surrounded by those your love the most, those dearest and closest.

What an absolute blessing to be able to spend quality time in a holiday destination with those you love.

World Ventures Travel Reviews

Posted: under Travel Reviews.
Tags: , , ,

Can a newbie or seasoned network marketer make real residual income with the worldventures travel biz? One of my good friends and mentors in the network marketing industry just joined and so I’ve been taking a serious look at it. This article is a unique unbias review of the worldventures biz as I am a network marketer and company outsider. It will describe the MLM travel industry, the world ventures packages and how to build a successful network marketing organization.

Plano Texas is where Worldventures was born in 2005. This seems to be a business of great integrity that is well on its way to becoming the worlds larges discount travel company. Did you know the travel industry makes up just under half of the money that is currently being spent on the internet? It’s crazy!!

The signature product of WorldVentures is their Dream Trips package.A one time start up fee allows you access to worldventures and your first dream trip.

The travel industry accounts for forty three percent of the money changing hands online. The travel industry is by far the largest industry in the world. The trillion dollar industry is projected to double over the next 5 years. Combined with the network marketing industry that is currently experiencing record growth this could be the perfect storm if Worldventures can pull it off.

With millions of people looking for a plan b in the face of economic crisis the home biz industry is experiencing a massive flood of new prospects. The majority of network marketing companies offer very little real marketing training and it is no different with worldventures. New members are taught to build a “warm list” of family, friends and other unqualified prospects.

To find success in worldventures or any other MLM opportunity you must have a constant stream of new leads and prospects. A warm market will always eventually dry up and you will need a new system for getting qualified prospects to join you. Notice I said “quality” prospects. You don’t want just anyone joining your business. If your in network marketing for long term passive income (and you should be), you need to be finding serious business builders instead of “get rich quick” losers. This means you need to be marketing to existing network marketers. The highest quality prospect for a home based business is an existing home based business owner. This audience will only join you if you are an authority and a leader. You demonstrate this by promoting yourself first and your company second. This is the secret to attracting hungry entrepreneurs to your World Ventures organization

Combining the trillion dollar travel industry and the exploding network marketing arena is certainly a recipe for success. But without real world marketing training you will be another casualty of these two unforgiving industries.

Do Women Really Have Less Leisure Time Than Men?

Posted: under Travel & Leisure.
Tags: , , , , ,

The Fijian United Nations Development Programme, is considering looking at consigning a value to the time people use up on unsalaried work. The latest report revealed that women in Suva spend 58 hours a week on housework, contrasted to males who only spend 8 hours.

The report also said that women in the tropical island nation of Vanuatu, voted the Happiest Country On Earth in 2006, have 25 percent less leisure time than men. (Who is kidding who, in a male dominated community?)

UNDP Pacific Centre manager says “It’s important to provide separated out data about the different roles men and women play in the community, if the UNDP is to understand how a particular policy might impact differently on different genders”. Without this type of information, the Centre understands it would be unable to plan workable programs or policies.

The word is out that most people have 45 minutes more relaxation time daily, than was available 40 years ago. Half of that is used watching television (report numerous experts). The average person in a Western nation allocates 2.5 hours a day to the relaxing diversion of watching television.

This break down of an average person’s day to day routine was published in 2006 from an unknown source.

Activity:                                 Time Spent by Gender      Marital Status

Men       Women          Married   Single

Phone calls, mail, email      7 min     14min           8min        14 min

Caring for Non-household    13min    15min            13min       14min

Religious and civic duties   16min     21min           20min       17min

Caring for Family              20min     43min            45min        17min

Educational activities         28min    26min             7min         51min

Buying goods, services      38min      58min          53min       43min

Eating and drinking          1hr 18min 1hr 11 min   1hr 24 min 1hr 8 min

Household activities         1hr 20min 2hr 16 min  8hr  8 min   1hr 26 min

Work related activities      4hr 26min 3hr             4hr 1 min    3hr 18 min

Watching television         3hr 28min 2hr41 min     2hr 24 min  2hr 47 min

Personal care and sleep  9hr 13min  9hr37 min   9hr  8 min    9hr 46min

Then Harris Poll shared these results, in 2004, subsequent to a nationwide telephone survey:

·        35% of adults put reading top of their list.

·        21% would rather watch TV

·        20% liked to spend time with their family and friends

Harris Poll reported these three activities as having been placed at the head of the list every year since 1995. However, it is understood that technology such as the Internet clearly sways the use we make of leisure time.

There is one question that begs to be asked. How were these results arrived at and what is their ability to truly give an overall picture of life either in 2006 or 2009?

It certainly seems the more ‘time-saving-devices’ we are given, the less time we have to do the things we really want to do. Time is our most precious resource and must be used, protected, cared for and used wisely, just as we consider the expenditure of any of our other resources.

Best Eco Lodges Campi Ya Kanzi In Kenya “walks The Talk”

Posted: under Hotels and Lodging.
Tags: , , , , , ,

Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust with an investment of $800,000 a year shows to the landlords that a wilderness with thriving wildlife is the best way to maintain their land and their culture. Because of the choices to have the minimal impact on the environment, from solar electricity from solar panels, to rain cropping, to water filtration, to cooking with sustainable fuel (charcoal made with coffee husks). Because of the culture and identity of not having a green make up, but in having a green soul, shown in everything they do.

In 2009, Campi Ya Kanzi has acquired 13 solar panels, to guarantee a total independency from the back up generator. They also purchased new solar boilers, to guarantee that even during cloudy days hot water will be guaranteed to both guests as well as the laundry and kitchen.

Campi Ya Kanzi also secured a sanctuary of 5,000 acres, set up as Kanzi Conservancy, where no boma and no grazing is permitted (which means no access by the local Maasai livestock). This is both historical and very meaningful, as not only it has created an area solely dedicated to wild herbivores and carnivores, but it has shown to the Maasai that land treated as pure wilderness can pay dividends to the Maasai landlords, hence creating a viable alternative to cattle ranching, which lately was done unsustainably. The conservancy is paid both in terms of a yearly management fee to the landlords and in direct employment of game scouts, therefore spreading the benefit to the community.

Along the same principles of Kanzi Conservancy, They have set up a Research and Conservation Centre, as headquarter of the foundation, the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust. The headquarter is a tented camp with an office and it will represent the regional place for both conservation and research. Payment to the landlords is both in a management fee and in direct employment.

Another great story is the success of the consolation program, Simba Project, where livestock preyed by any predator is compensated to the Maasai landlords. While lions are disappearing at a shocking rate everywhere else, the lion population has increased three folds since the inception of the program. In 2009 no predators were killed. The program is fairly easy: all losses are monitored and check by MWCT officers, all genuine losses are covered by a credit note, paid quarterly in arrears if no predators were killed. It costs, but it works brilliantly and it shows to the Maasai landlords it is indeed possible to coexist with wildlife, as long as the costs for it are paid for.

Global House Price Downturn Accelerated At End Of 2008 According To The Global Property Guide

Posted: under General.
Tags: , , , , , , , ,

It has been a dismal year for house prices, according to the Global Property Guide’s latest survey of publicly-available house-price time-series for the year 2008. And seen from a global perspective, the downturn is still accelerating.

The collapse of the world’s housing markets can be seen from three points of view, and unfortunately, all of them reinforce the bad news.

During 2008, the downward price momentum accelerated, as compared to 2007.
Only 2 countries saw positive momentum in 2008 (a slower downward house price movement than last year, or faster upward movement), while 28 countries saw their housing market momentum deteriorating, compared to the previous year. The two countries with a positive momentum were Germany and Switzerland.

During 2008, house prices fell in most countries.

During 2008 only 8 out of 32 countries saw house prices rise, after adjustment for inflation, while 20 countries experienced house price falls.

In contrast, during the year 2007, the downturn was just beginning, and only 6 countries saw house prices fall, while 24 countries saw house prices rise (all figures inflation-adjusted).

Many house-price falls during 2008 were extremely severe. Countries with house price falls of over 10% during 2008 were Latvia (Riga) (37%), Lithuania (Vilnius) (27%), the US (20%), the UK (18%), Iceland (16%), Ireland (12%), and the Ukraine (Kiev) (12%) (all figures inflation-adjusted).

During the final quarter (Q4) of 2008, the downward price momentum significantly accelerated, as compared to Q3, suggesting that the situation is deteriorating.

During 2008’s final quarter, 9 countries saw house price falls of 5% or more during just that quarter. Price drops of more than 10% during this single quarter occurred in three countries – in Latvia (Riga), which saw price falls of 15%, in Ukraine (Kiev) (13%), and in Hong Kong (15%). Other countries with Q4 house-price falls of 5% and over, included the UAE (8%), Lithuania (7%), Iceland (7%), Singapore (6%), Bulgaria (5%), and the UK (5%) (all figures inflation-adjusted, except UAE).

These price falls were much greater than during the previous quarter, Q3. During that previous quarter, only two countries experienced house-price falls (inflation-adjusted) of 5% or more, and no countries experienced house-price falls of more than 10%.

REGIONAL SURVEY BY GLOBAL PROPERTY GUIDE

Europe has major problems
The Baltic countries of Latvia and Lithuania suffered the hardest price falls both in nominal and real terms. In Riga, Latvia, the average price of standard-type apartments plunged 37% during 2008. Prices have been going down in Latvia since late 2007, after a remarkable increase of about 70% in 2006. The most alarming decline took place in the 4th quarter, when prices declined by 15%, the steepest quarterly drop in real terms in any country. These price falls were triggered by increased interest rates, and by the tightened credit rules which Latvia imposed in 2007.

Average prices of apartments in Vilnius, Lithuania, fell by 27% during 2008. House prices started slowing in mid-2007, and crashed in early 2008.

House prices in the UK plummeted by 18% in 2008. Although mortgage interest rates dropped slightly, to 4.48% in December 2008, the number of loan approvals for house purchases fell 58% in 2008.

There is serious trouble in Iceland (house price fall of 16% during 2008), Ireland (12%), Ukraine (12%), Malta (9%), Portugal (8%), France (8%) Finland (7%), Norway (6%) and in Spain (6%).

North America’s woes
In the US, the centre of the global financial crisis, in 2008 house prices fell 20% according to the Case-Shiller house price index, which emphasizes urban areas. OFHEO and FHFB figures, which are associated with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac loans and have somewhat lost credibility, suggest a smaller decline of 6% and 3% respectively, during 2008. The US government recently approved a $ 787 billion economic stimulus package, of which $275 billion will be allocated to rescue the ailing housing market.

Canada has been much less affected than the US.

Pacific heads down
Both Australia and New Zealand saw house price declines during 2008, of 7% and 8% respectively.

Asia no longer insulated
Housing markets in Asia have not been insulated. Singapore, Hong Kong and Philippines recorded house price falls during 2008.

Singapore’s private residential prices dropped 9% during 2008, in sharp contrast to the 26% price increase of experienced during 2007. The developed countries’ economic troubles adversely affected Singapore’s exports, and during 2008, output in the manufacturing sector, particularly of electronics, precision engineering and chemicals, shrank by 10.7%. Singapore was officially in recession in Q3 2008.

Hong Kong has been badly hit by the crisis. House prices were down by an average of 6% in 2008. But during the last quarter, Hong Kong experienced a severe decline in prices of 14%.

In Makati, Philippines, prime 3-bedroom condominium prices fell by 2% during 2008, after an 11% price rise during 2007. Nevertheless construction of high-rise residential buildings continues, with residential condominium stock rising by 7% during 2008, according to Colliers Philippines.

Japan recorded modest Tokyo condominium price rises of 1.2% during 2008. On the other hand, land prices in Japan’s six major cities fell by 6% y-o-y to Sep-2008.

In Shanghai, China, house price rises slowed to 5% y-o-y by the end of 2008, after peaking at 30% y-o-y to May 2008. However Shanghai is likely to be somewhat exceptional, and Xinhua News Agency reported house prices declines in 70 major cities during 2008. Shenzhen suffered the hardest fall, with prices down by 18% during 2008

UAE on shaky ground
In Dubai, UAE, despite the bleak global picture, saw surprisingly large dwelling price rises of 41% during 2008. However during the year’s final quarter, prices fell by 8% in nominal terms. This downturn is attributable to strongly tightening lending criteria, an increase in interest rates, multiple layoffs, and alarm among buyers.

Forecast: No recovery in 2009
History suggests that in a crash, housing markets take many years from peak year to full recovery. In view of this and of the pessimistic IMF forecast for the global economy, no real recovery is likely in the global housing markets this year.

The IMF has predicted that the world economy will grow by 0.5% in 2009, the lowest level in 60 years. GDP in advanced economies is expected to decline by 2% during 2009. The United Kingdom and Japan will be hit the hardest. Output in the UK may contract by 2.8%, while Japan’s may fall by 2.6%.

Growth in emerging economies is expected to slow to 3.3% in 2009, down from 6.3% in 2008. Developing Asia is forecast to be the least affected, with growth of 5.5%. China’s economy is predicted grow by 6.7% in 2009, but this is a substantial decline from 9% growth during 2008.

We cannot be optimistic for five reasons:
• Valuations still clearly remain stretched in most countries, in terms of price/rent ratios.
• Economic growth is slowing or negative in many countries, which is negative for housing values.
• There are no signs that banks are becoming more willing to lend.
• The unprecedented nature of the financial system’s collapse has greatly added to the difficulties facing the world’s housing markets.
• Some national governments are experiencing difficulty in refinancing their national debt, putting their currencies under pressure. Currency instability is likely to aggravate housing sector problems in countries where many loans were taken out in a foreign currency.

The positive news is that the US government and several others are acting with vigour, as has the IMF. Nevertheless, there is a long tough road ahead.

Breckenridge Rafting and using a Cataraft

Someone asked us this question in their search for rafts. “I am looking for advice on the purchase of a cataraft or maybe a raft, but not sure if its ideal or not?? Does anyone have any input on cats or rafts??  Answer: Cats are for maneuverability-small loads and is ideal for whitewater rafting and fishing.  A raft is for large loads and more people so it is up to your trip details that determine a cat or a raft.

Cats are far more maneuverable than self bailers but carry less weight. They’re the sports cars of a Breckenridge Rafting trip. And like sports cars, they carry fewer passengers, but provide a lot of fun for the driver. If you’re new to rafting, you would be well advised to consider buying a cataraft as your first raft. Their maneuverability will help you recover when you misjudge a rapid, and of course they are just plain fun. When you plan a Breckenridge Rafting trip, a cataraft is the ideal raft for a day trip. And cats are also ideal for high water or extreme multi-day trips when each participant will row their own raft. There is a unique description to know when sizes of cats are discussed. Sizes of catarafts are described as pairs of dimensions separated by “X”, like “12X20″, “16X24″. The first number is the length in feet, and the second number is the diameter of the pontoons in inches. So a cat that is 12X20 is 12 feet long with pontoons or “tubes” as they are referred to that are 20 inches in diameter.

Snorkeling in Fiji

Posted: under Outdoors.
Tags: ,

Snorkeling in fiji is a highlight that just about every traveler tries when having fun in Fiji. You can find excellent reefs and amazing sea life to scope out. Not to mention a lot of great places close to the coast making it a great “pass the time away activity” if your looking for things to do in Fiji that’s affordable. All you need to get going is a mask, snorkel and a set of fins.

Be sure and put on sunscreen and maybe even a t-shirt because it’s really easy to lose track of time and get caught up in the sights and come out with a scorched back and legs. It is common to see sharks and other sea life and a lot of the underwater critters are poisonous so it’s best not to touch anything. Snorkeling in Fiji at night is an excellent experience if your not afraid of the unknown and open to different Fiji activities.

You can usually find great snorkeling gear from the tour operators and resorts but keep in mind bad snorkeling gear can ruin the experience. It’s not bad idea to find out in advance how good the gear is or bring your own. It’s pretty easy to carry, and inexpensive, plus you won’t have the thought of putting your mouth where someone else’s has been.

A lot of the places in Fiji you can only snorkel at high tide due to the coral and be cautious of the currents. The best places to go on Viti Levu is at Natadola Beach but watch the current. You can also check out Nananu-i-Ra and Beqa Lagoon. The coast in Viti Levu is not that great for snorkeling because it’s pretty deep and swimming is mostly tidal.

For the best snorkeling dive site head toward the outer islands. Some of the best sites include Mamanucas and Yasawas, Vanua Levu’s rocky coastline, particularly near Mumu’s Resort, Taveuni’s Vuna Reef, offshore of the Matava Resort in Kadavu, and the Lomaiviti Group’s Caqalai and Leleuvia. Just about any site that is accessible will lead to a great time snorkeling in Fiji.
