21 April: A Historic Moment for Romania and FreeYa Mind Campus

0

On April 21, 2026, Romania wrote a new chapter in its technological history.

In Bucharest, we officially signed the delivery of the IBM Quantum System Two — placing Romania among the very few countries in the world to host operational quantum infrastructure of this class. This is more than a technological acquisition. It is a statement of intent: Romania is stepping actively into the quantum era.

Quantum Access for All of Romania

At the same ceremony, we signed a collaboration protocol with University POLITEHNICA of Bucharest, expanding the FreeYa Mind community to a truly national scale. Alongside our existing academic and institutional partners from Iași, Cluj, and Timișoara, UPB joins a unique ecosystem in Romania — one built around real, hands-on access to quantum technology.

Students and researchers from across the country will now be able to work directly on operational quantum systems and contribute to global knowledge in a field that is reshaping the boundaries of science and industry alike.

The First Generation of Quantum Professionals in Romania

The generation entering university today will be the first generation of quantum professionals trained on their own infrastructure, here in Romania. This is not a distant vision — it is the reality we are building together, right now.

FreeYa Mind Campus exists precisely to make this possible: to turn access to cutting-edge technology into a concrete opportunity for education, research, and innovation for young people across Romania.

The FreeYaMind Campus is a multidisciplinary science hub centered around IBM Quantum and complemented by advanced AI technologies. It promotes innovation across a wide range of fields, including physics, artificial intelligence, mathematics, medicine, drug discovery, chemistry, and materials science.
By bringing together students, researchers, and entrepreneurs in a dynamic, future-oriented environment, the campus enables collaboration on real-world challenges through the use of quantum computing and AI. Designed to inspire breakthrough discoveries, it also supports early-stage companies in pushing the boundaries of technology, scientific research, and industrial transformation.
The FreeYaMind Campus project provides access and opportunities for researchers, students, and innovators across Romania. In April, an additional collaboration protocol was signed with the National University of Science and Technology POLITEHNICA Bucharest. The goal is to expand the FreeYaMind community to a truly national scale, building on its existing academic and institutional partnerships in Iași, Cluj, and Timișoara.

Together, these collaborations are creating a unique ecosystem that provides real, hands-on access to quantum technologies and advanced AI, helping to develop the next generation of scientists, engineers, and technology leaders in Romania.

Initiatives like this can play a critical role in developing Romania’s next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators, while strengthening the country’s position in the global technology ecosystem.

Acknowledgements

We extend our deepest gratitude to IBM for their trust, their professionalism, and for making the strategic decision to choose Romania. We thank the IBM team involved directly in this milestone, all of our university partners, public and private sector institutions, and everyone who believed in this project from the very beginning.

The FreeYa Mind community is being built step by step. And the future looks extraordinarily bright.
